The first time I played The Listening Room with him I remember thinking "Hey this guy is great". I wasn't surprised when I later found out he was from around Beaumont, TX. They put singing and writing talent in the water down there and Dustin grew up drinking from that same well. I love writing with this guy.
-- Rory Bourke, Hall of Fame Songwriter
Dustin was selected to be a part of the coveted ASCAP GPS Project for being identified as one of the up and coming Nashville songwriters. His songs exemplify his creative intuition and strong melodic sense. We at ASCAP are proud of Dustin and continue to work closely with him to help him achieve his creative and professional goals.
-- Ryan Beuschel, ASCAP Nashville Creative Manager

DUSTIN JAMES HONORED WITH ASCAP FOUNDATION'S 2012 JAY GORNEY AWARD
Performs Winning Song Live at 17th Annual ASCAP Foundation Awards
Nashville, Tenn., December 18, 2012 – The ASCAP Foundation honored Nashville songwriter Dustin James with the 2012 Jay Gorney Award at the 17th Annual ASCAP Foundation Awards, held on Wednesday, December 12th in New York City. In addition to a cash scholarship, James received airfare and lodging to attend the ceremony at the famed Jazz At Lincoln Center, where he accompanied recording artist Brittini Black in a live performance of the award-winning song, "God Has Given Hope A Name (America).” The award was established by the family of late composer Jay Gorney to recognize exceptional contemporary songs that reflect the elements of social consciousness present in Gorney’s 1930s classic anthem of the Great Depression, “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?”
Inspired by his first visit to Ellis Island, James' song paints a vivid and moving picture of the triumphant and often harrowing experiences of European immigrants during America's immigration boom of the early 1900s. Award namesake Jay Gorney was himself a part of this group, having emigrated to the U.S. from Russia as a youth before going on to a successful songwriting career during the salad days of New York City's Tin Pan Alley. |

| The chorus of “God Has Given Hope A Name (America)” allows listeners a glimpse of America as seen through the eyes of these early immigrants: "America I hear you calling me / Sweet land of liberty I’m on my way / America beckoning with open arms / I long to feel the warmth of freedom’s flame / God has given hope a name America." |
"Dustin's songs exemplify his creative intuition and strong melodic sense. We are very proud of the recognition he has received with The ASCAP Foundation Jay Gorney Award, and we will continue to work closely with Dustin to help him achieve his creative and professional goals" noted ASCAP Creative Manager Ryan Beuschel.
Among other honorees at the December 12th ceremony were Nashville singer-songwriter and Wrensong/Reynsong staff writer Jacob Davis, on hand to accept the ASCAP Foundation Leon Brettler Award, and pop singer-songwriter Jason Mraz, recipient of the ASCAP Foundation Champion Award.
The 2012 Jay Gorney Award marks the second time Dustin James has been honored by The ASCAP Foundation. The southeast Texas native and Texas A&M grad earned the foundation's Harold Adamson Lyric Award in 2008. That year, while in New York City to accept his award, James toured Ellis and Liberty Islands and was inspired to pen this year's winning song. |
